IEX Cloud Overview
IEX Cloud was a financial data API platform launched in May 2019 by IEX Group, the operator of the Investors Exchange (IEX). It offered over 50 institutional-grade core datasets through a unified REST API, covering U.S. equities, ETFs, forex, cryptocurrencies, and macroeconomic data. The platform's standout features included sub-8ms average response times, SSE-based real-time streaming, and a credit-based "messages" pricing model that let developers pay only for data they actually consumed.
Designed with developers and fintech startups in mind, IEX Cloud provided a cost-effective alternative to expensive Bloomberg or Refinitiv terminals. Client libraries in multiple programming languages, an interactive API explorer, and comprehensive documentation made onboarding straightforward. A built-in Rules Engine allowed users to configure automated alerts via SMS, email, or webhook whenever defined data conditions were met. At its peak the platform served 125,000+ users across 120+ countries.
Despite strong developer adoption, IEX Cloud operated at a loss throughout its existence and represented less than 2% of IEX Group's overall revenue. In May 2024, IEX Group announced it would retire the service, and all IEX Cloud products were officially shut down on August 31, 2024. Former IEX Cloud executives Tim Baker and Pedro Aguayo subsequently acquired the assets and launched Blue Sky Data in September 2024, offering backward-compatible APIs for existing IEX Cloud customers.
For traders and developers researching historical data solutions, IEX Cloud remains a useful reference point for API design and credit-based data pricing models. Its successor, Blue Sky Data, preserves the API structure and is the recommended migration path for former users seeking continuity of coverage and endpoint compatibility.
